Endowment size and reporting scope

The USD 102.342 million survey balance belongs to the respondent named Texas Lutheran University. Donor-restricted resources can be invested beside funds designated by the governing board for long-term use. Each account retains its purpose and beneficiary. A pooled vehicle can also include reserves or other long-term money, which gives its market value a different scope from endowed net assets. The reporting category needs to travel with the number. Survey scope and definitions

The official USD 82.745 million figure and the FY2025 survey's USD 102.342 million describe their respective dates and reporting categories. The official balance retains its stated label, invested endowment net assets. Official financial scope

Spending policy and payout

TLU's FY2025 spending policy appropriates 7% of the prior 12-quarter moving-average pool value through the calendar year-end preceding the distribution year. Its roll-forward reports $5.855161 million in regular appropriations plus $1.731255 million in additional operating appropriations for FY2025. The chart combines those two deductions. FY2024 combines $5.506145 million of regular appropriations, $2.491944 million for additional operating support and $80,754 for capital. The extra appropriations are separate board decisions. Distribution report

A distribution from an endowed account remains subject to that account's purpose. For Texas Lutheran University, the FY2025 asset figure alone cannot establish either the next approved draw or the part available for unrestricted operations. A policy based on several earlier valuations can produce a different dollar appropriation from a percentage of today's closing balance. The survey group's effective rate has its own measurement basis. Spending measures

Governance and investment office

TLU's Board of Regents approves endowment appropriations under Texas prudent-management law. Its financial statements separate donor-restricted endowments from board-designated funds. The investment objective of a 7% to 8% average annual return is a long-term assumption, with actual investment results reported separately. Investment governance

Federal excise tax on investment income

Public Law 119-21 changed Section 4968 for tax years beginning after December 31, 2025. Applicable private institutions must have at least 3,000 tuition-paying students in the preceding tax year, with more than half located in the United States, and student-adjusted endowment of at least $500,000. The rates are 1.4% from $500,000 through $750,000 per student, 4% above $750,000 through $2 million, and 8% above $2 million. Enacted law, Section 70415

An institution's tax tier requires its statutory asset base, eligible student count and related-organization treatment. The survey's closing market value does not supply that calculation. No institution-specific rate is assigned without an institutional disclosure. A campus's enrollment in a public fact sheet can differ from the daily-average, full-time-equivalent count required by the law.

Section 4968 taxes net investment income; the spending policy governs distributions.

FY2025 size-band comparison

The FY2025 survey value of USD 102.342 million places this respondent in the $100M to $250M band. The published band contains 154 respondents and USD 24.5 billion of aggregate assets. Its average five-year annualized net return is 9.6%, and its ten-year average is 7.4%. NCSE size groups NCSE average net returns

The peer mix describes average reported exposures within one size band. It does not reveal individual securities or the availability of cash at a particular institution. Respondents can also use different policy benchmarks. Endowments are some of the most studied investors in the world, and the numbers are scattered across financial reports, press releases and student newspapers. This site puts each endowment's figures in one place, from its own reports first, names every source, and says plainly when a number has not been published.

How we check facts

Each fact names its source and its date. We start with the institution's own financial report, investment office report and press release, then official filings, then third-party reporting. Figures are tied to a fiscal year, because most endowments report once a year. When two sources disagree, we show both. When an endowment has not published a number, we say so rather than estimate it silently.

Status labels

Multiple sourcesTwo or more independent sources agree.
Single sourceOne source, usually the institution itself.
EstimateA third-party estimate or a conversion. Not stated by the institution.
PendingShown for structure; the figure or its source is still being confirmed.

What this site is

Endowments.com is a research resource on university, college and foundation endowments. It profiles 775 endowments, including university, college, foundation and hospital endowments, built from each institution's own reports and public filings, and runs the Endowments by Size Band benchmark study. Every figure carries its source and date.

Richard C. Wilson, founder of the Family Office Club

I started Family Office Club 19 years ago at 26, as my 12th startup and the first one that worked. All three of my daughters are in the business with me now. My father raised $1 billion for non-profits before I ever started, so I grew up watching this.

Since then: 300+ in-person events, 1,500 investors on stage, 250+ family offices created or formalized, 46 transactions off my own balance sheet, and CIO of a $180M single family office.

I am not a broker. I am not a bank. I do not charge for anything on this site. I built it because endowment figures are spread across hundreds of reports and press releases, and few places put them side by side with sources.
