Consistent Performance Measurement for Endowments

Adapted for endowment and foundation boards from Chapter 10 of The Single Family Office by Richard C. Wilson.

There are dozens of ways to measure investment performance. That is the problem. If the board hasn't agreed on which ones count, it becomes easy to favor the metric that looks good this quarter.

What I have seen go wrong

In the book I wrote about institutional investors and family offices that trailed their peers and didn't realize it. Their CIO or outside consultant was choosing which numbers to show. Even with good intentions, investment teams can fall prey to their own biases and hide real risk or weak results.

It gets worse when pay is tied to performance and the team picks the yardstick.

Lock the yardsticks in the policy

The investment policy statement should name:

  1. The return objective. Usually spending plus inflation over a long period.
  2. The policy benchmark. A blend of indexes that matches your target allocation.
  3. A simple market benchmark. Many institutions use a global stock and bond mix. Brown, for example, compares itself with a 70% stock and 30% bond portfolio. Dartmouth uses a 60/40 mix.
  4. A peer comparison. Such as a published endowment universe for your size band.
  5. The time periods that count. One year is noise. Five, ten and twenty years tell the story.

Ask for the same table every time

Each quarter, the committee should see the same table in the same order. Actual return, policy benchmark, simple benchmark and peer median, across the same periods. If anything changes, staff should explain why in writing.

The cheap alternative

The simple stock and bond mix is the low-cost choice the board could always make. If a complex portfolio with high fees trails it over ten years, the board should know. Some years it will. Dartmouth's FY2025 report, for example, shows its 10.8% return below a 60/40 benchmark's 12.0% for that year, and well ahead over ten years. That is exactly the kind of honest table a board should get.

Frequently asked questions

Which matters more, the policy benchmark or the peer median?

They answer different questions. The policy benchmark tests execution. The peer median tests strategy against similar institutions.

Should staff bonuses be tied to returns?

Many large offices do this. If you do, set the benchmark before the year starts.

Are returns reported gross or net?

Endowments usually report net of external manager fees.

Endowments are some of the most studied investors in the world, and the numbers are scattered across financial reports, press releases and student newspapers. This site puts each endowment's figures in one place, from its own reports first, names every source, and says plainly when a number has not been published.

How we check facts

Each fact names its source and its date. We start with the institution's own financial report, investment office report and press release, then official filings, then third-party reporting. Figures are tied to a fiscal year, because most endowments report once a year. When two sources disagree, we show both. When an endowment has not published a number, we say so rather than estimate it silently.

Status labels

Multiple sourcesTwo or more independent sources agree.
Single sourceOne source, usually the institution itself.
EstimateA third-party estimate or a conversion. Not stated by the institution.
PendingShown for structure; the figure or its source is still being confirmed.

About Endowments.com

Richard C. Wilson

What this site is

Endowments.com is a research resource on university, college and foundation endowments. It profiles 775 endowments, including university, college, foundation and hospital endowments, built from each institution's own reports and public filings, and runs the Endowments by Size Band benchmark study. Every figure carries its source and date.

Richard C. Wilson, founder of the Family Office Club

I started Family Office Club 19 years ago at 26, as my 12th startup and the first one that worked. All three of my daughters are in the business with me now. My father raised $1 billion for non-profits before I ever started, so I grew up watching this.

Since then: 300+ in-person events, 1,500 investors on stage, 250+ family offices created or formalized, 46 transactions off my own balance sheet, and CIO of a $180M single family office.

I am not a broker. I am not a bank. I do not charge for anything on this site. I built it because endowment figures are spread across hundreds of reports and press releases, and few places put them side by side with sources.
