Analyze Your Competition Before You Pitch an Endowment

Adapted for fund managers pitching endowments from Chapter 1 of Capital Raising by Richard C. Wilson.

When you pitch an endowment, the staff on the other side of the table has probably met a dozen managers who sound like you this year. You are not being judged alone. You are being compared.

The first step in my capital raising system is analysis. Of your competitors, your investors and yourself. Skip it and everything after works at a fraction of its power.

Questions to ask about competitors

From the book, adapted for an endowment raise:

  1. What are similar funds offering on strategy, terms and fees?
  2. How strong is their positioning? Can you say what they stand for in one line?
  3. How credible are they in reality, not just in their deck?
  4. How transparent are they on track record and risk?
  5. How professional is their brand and material?
  6. How do they build relationships with allocators? Conferences, consultants, research, referrals?
  7. Which investor type do they raise the most from?

Pick three to measure against

Choose the three competitors with the strongest materials, research and reputation with endowments. Study them. Hold yourself to their standard and then above it. Having someone to measure against raises the quality of everything you send.

Then analyze the endowment side

  • Which endowments already invest in your asset class?
  • What size do they tend to be? A $300 million college and a $20 billion university buy very differently.
  • Do they use an outsourced CIO or a consultant who screens managers first?
  • Which ones would realistically give you a meeting?

Public filings help here. Many endowments publish annual reports with their asset allocation. The directory on this site lists 100 large endowments with sizes and links to their reports.

Then analyze yourself

  • What can you do that a much larger firm can't, because of its size or bureaucracy?
  • Can you offer something specific, such as lower fees, capacity or co-investment?
  • Which group of endowments could you win by focusing only on them?

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find what competitors charge?

Allocators, consultants and placement agents hear terms all the time. Ask them what is common in your strategy.

Should I name competitors in my pitch?

Usually no. Show your edge directly. Staff will make the comparison themselves.

How often should I redo this analysis?

At least yearly, and before any new fund launch.

Endowments are some of the most studied investors in the world, and the numbers are scattered across financial reports, press releases and student newspapers. This site puts each endowment's figures in one place, from its own reports first, names every source, and says plainly when a number has not been published.

How we check facts

Each fact names its source and its date. We start with the institution's own financial report, investment office report and press release, then official filings, then third-party reporting. Figures are tied to a fiscal year, because most endowments report once a year. When two sources disagree, we show both. When an endowment has not published a number, we say so rather than estimate it silently.

Status labels

Multiple sourcesTwo or more independent sources agree.
Single sourceOne source, usually the institution itself.
EstimateA third-party estimate or a conversion. Not stated by the institution.
PendingShown for structure; the figure or its source is still being confirmed.

About Endowments.com

Richard C. Wilson

What this site is

Endowments.com is a research resource on university, college and foundation endowments. It profiles 775 endowments, including university, college, foundation and hospital endowments, built from each institution's own reports and public filings, and runs the Endowments by Size Band benchmark study. Every figure carries its source and date.

Richard C. Wilson, founder of the Family Office Club

I started Family Office Club 19 years ago at 26, as my 12th startup and the first one that worked. All three of my daughters are in the business with me now. My father raised $1 billion for non-profits before I ever started, so I grew up watching this.

Since then: 300+ in-person events, 1,500 investors on stage, 250+ family offices created or formalized, 46 transactions off my own balance sheet, and CIO of a $180M single family office.

I am not a broker. I am not a bank. I do not charge for anything on this site. I built it because endowment figures are spread across hundreds of reports and press releases, and few places put them side by side with sources.
