History source

The selected series moved from $26,826,958 at March 11, 2020 to $31,908,781 at March 11, 2021. That is a rise of $5,081,823, or 18.94% of the earlier closing balance. This arithmetic describes the change in the reported fund size. Gifts and amounts spent can also change the balance, so the percentage is not an investment performance result. Annual balance evidence

Reading the reported balances

The displayed 5-date series begins at $23,906,658 on March 11, 2017 and ends at $31,908,781 on March 11, 2021. Across those observations, the closing fund balance increased by $8,002,123. The smallest reported amount is $23,906,658 at March 11, 2017; the largest is $31,908,781 at March 11, 2021. Annual balance evidence

The series records 4 increases and 0 decreases between consecutive dates in the displayed series. Each interval compares two closing accounting values. The observation count describes the published history on this page and does not imply a complete history since the fund was established. Annual balance evidence

The current filing belongs to EIN 59-6137805. Its fiscal date remains separate from the dates of neighboring hospital entries in the compiled list. The endowment history follows the disclosed closing-balance fields rather than the return's total-assets line. Filing boundary

Endowment flows and spending

For the tax period ending March 11, 2021, Schedule D begins with $26,826,958 in endowment. The investment earnings, gains and losses line is $5,366,289. The earnings line is a dollar accounting amount. Calculating a time-weighted return would require information about the timing of external cash flows and the portfolio's return calculation. Schedule D roll-forward

The same Schedule D reports $284,466 for other expenditures for facilities and programs. These retain the tax form's labels. Their dollar amounts do not establish an annual spending policy based on average portfolio values. Disclosed endowment uses

The reported opening balance, additions and listed expenditures reconcile exactly to the closing balance. A zero residual confirms this accounting roll-forward; it does not validate an investment return calculation. Reconciliation inputs

Portfolio disclosure and investment oversight

Schedule D classifies the closing endowment as board-designated or quasi-endowment 74.6%, permanent endowment 3.91%, term endowment 21.49%. These percentages classify the legal restrictions on endowment funds. They do not describe investments in stocks, bonds or other asset classes. Restriction categories

The public return identifies officers for its own reporting period. Investment oversight titles from that period do not establish a current appointment. Dated public filing

Hospital finances and community benefit

The Form 990 for the period ending March 11, 2021 reports $0 in total assets, $15,727,989 in total revenue, $13,092,349 in total expenses. The return reports zero year-end total assets alongside the stated endowment line. These disclosures are retained as reported; no available operating resources are inferred from them. These are filer-wide figures. Total assets can include property, patient receivables and operating resources outside the endowment. Revenue and expenses describe annual activity; the endowment figure is a closing stock of assets. Tax-filing financial snapshot

No community-benefit dollar amount is assigned from this filer's available Schedule H fields. A hospital foundation can support care without operating a licensed hospital itself. Endowment expenditures therefore do not automatically equal the hospital's financial assistance or its total community-benefit expense. Filer financial record

Section 501(r) applies to hospital organizations operating one or more hospital facilities. A supporting foundation is not automatically a hospital operator. The IRS describes facility-level requirements covering community health needs assessments, financial assistance, limits on charges and billing and collection. This page makes no determination about the foundation's or a supported hospital's compliance. IRS hospital requirements

Comparison with our compiled hospital list

Bethesda Hospital Foundation is number 160 in our compiled list of 541 hospital-related endowment records. The entries below are nearby by selected dollar size. This is our own compilation of public disclosures. The comparison uses selected financial balances and reporting dates. It does not measure investment skill or clinical outcomes. Full compiled list

Bethesda Hospital$31,752,7372025-09-30
Doylestown Health Foundation$32,377,1842025-06-30

The institutions have different reporting dates and legal boundaries. Some records cover a system, while others cover an operating hospital or supporting foundation. Their investment pools can overlap. The table gives scale context only; its balances should not be added together as a national endowment total. Comparison evidence

Endowments are some of the most studied investors in the world, and the numbers are scattered across financial reports, press releases and student newspapers. This site puts each endowment's figures in one place, from its own reports first, names every source, and says plainly when a number has not been published.

    How we check facts

Each fact names its source and its date. We start with the institution's own financial report, investment office report and press release, then official filings, then third-party reporting. Figures are tied to a fiscal year, because most endowments report once a year. When two sources disagree, we show both. When an endowment has not published a number, we say so rather than estimate it silently.

    Status labels

    Richard C. Wilson

    What this site is

Endowments.com is a research resource on university, college and foundation endowments. It profiles 775 endowments, including university, college, foundation and hospital endowments, built from each institution's own reports and public filings, and runs the Endowments by Size Band benchmark study. Every figure carries its source and date.

Richard C. Wilson, founder of the Family Office Club

I started Family Office Club 19 years ago at 26, as my 12th startup and the first one that worked. All three of my daughters are in the business with me now. My father raised $1 billion for non-profits before I ever started, so I grew up watching this.

Since then: 300+ in-person events, 1,500 investors on stage, 250+ family offices created or formalized, 46 transactions off my own balance sheet, and CIO of a $180M single family office.

I am not a broker. I am not a bank. I do not charge for anything on this site. I built it because endowment figures are spread across hundreds of reports and press releases, and few places put them side by side with sources.
